Gopal Hari Dasa: Teacher of The Vaisnava Acharyas - 2009-07-26
 What's been your experience of teaching at the college?
Srila Prabhupada often said that the perfection of one's education is
to use it in Lord Krishna's service. I felt satisfied, because teaching
gave me a wonderful opportunity to use my studies in Krishna's service.
Although many courses at Bhaktivedanta College are academic, they
contain krsna-katha. I taught Readings from Vaisnava Acharyas. In the
process of preparing and teaching this course, I absorbed myself in
studying Vaisnava acharyas. The students, unlike those at other
universities where I have taught, were enthusiastic and interested.
This made the course especially enjoyable. Certainly the Vaisnava
acharyas uplifted and enlivened us all.
What's it like being Radhika-Raman's younger brother?
In previous ages, people went alone deep into the forests to worship
the Lord. But "in Kali-yuga,†Prabhupada said, “no one can work alone.â€
When Prabhupada said this, a devotee sneezed, and Srila Prabhupada
said, “Confirmed.†So both my brother and I feel fortunate to have each
other’s association and support in practicing Krsna consciousness. Life
is a long, tough journey, and good friendship can help us through it. I
see my brother more like my mentor, because his wonderful example and
qualities have been a constant inspiration for me.
What do you plan to do after obtaining a Ph.D. from Oxford University?
I would like to continue serving Srila Prabhupada's movement.
Generally, material assets of wealth, beauty, fame, and education are
disqualifications on the spiritual path. However, if we can use our
material assets in spreading Krsna consciousness, they can become
spiritual assets. Just as wealth can be a great asset in building a
beautiful temple or college for Krishna, similarly, education can also
be used to glorify Krishna.
What is your message to the students?
I urge the students to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity they
have been provided. It is a great privilege and a matter of great
fortune to study in devotee association. Other colleges provide more
facilities, but nowhere else will students get the opportunity to
deeply study in English our priceless Vaisnava tradition and receive a
fully accredited Bachelor's degree.
