New Year College Raclette Party - 2010-01-14
 Some very happy devotees On the evening of 9th January 2010, the students at Bhaktivedanta College organized a party for the members of the Radhadesh community. They wanted to celebrate the end of the Christmas food distribution program and express their gratitude to the community.
There was a Ramayana theme to the occasion, with many devotees dressing up as characters from the life of Lord Rama. There were many monkey warriors in evidence, especially amongst the children.
Devotees were served raclette cheese with crisp French bread, potatoes, veggie hot-dogs, gherkins, mustard, and tomato sauce. Both staff and students were on hand to serve the prasadam meal, bringing diners their particular favourites. Everyone could eat as much as they liked, with many taking seconds and even thirds.
The evening was rounded off watching the cartoon Ramayan – the legend of Prince Rama.
Kumari from Hawaii and Braja Biharini from Macedonia were the main inspiration for and organizers of the evening.
The evening was a great success – we got a lot of positive feedback
that devotees really liked it. If possible, we would like to organize
another similar evening next year as well.
The origins of raclette
The inspiration for serving raclette came from Jaya Krsna – who comes
from Switzerland. Raclette is both a type of cheese and a dish
featuring this cheese. The cheese is usually fashioned into a round of
about 6 kg. The dish is common in parts of Switzerland, Wallonia, and
France. The raclette cheese is heated, either in front of a fire or by
a special machine, then scraped onto diners’ plates. Traditionally, it
is accompanied by small firm potatoes, gherkins, sliced peppers,
tomato, pears, and dusted with paprika and fresh-ground black pepper.
In the Swiss canton of Valais, raclette is typically served with tea or other warm drinks. It is a popular dish, especially around Christmas.
